A former Governor of California confronts the ghosts of his past who help him come to terms with the clemency decisions he made in the 1960s. The true events surrounding one seminal death penalty case are told in the form of a play staged on death row and performed by three condemned inmates. The conflict between the responsibilities of public service and being true to one’s moral beliefs is at the heart of this drama – a drama that in real life had a profound effect on American politics for over three decades. Inspired by the

writings of Governor Edmund “Pat” Brown and Caryl Chessman.

SYNOPSIS
The ultimate in classic comic theatrical entertainment!  Oscar Wilde’s hilarious farce, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST , or “A Trivial Comedy for Serious People,” comes to the Performing Arts Center in time to make  spring really SPRING!  A farcical comedy in which two young men-about-London Jack Worthing and his friend Algernon Moncrieff maintain fictitious identities in order to escape burdensome social obligations, the play pokes fun at such serious  subjects as marriage, love, and Victorian society. World famous for its many witty lines such as: “If I am occasionally a little over-dressed, I make up for it by being immensely over-educated” and “In married life, three is company, and two is none,” THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST is high farce and one of the world’s most enduringly popular plays.
(Appropriate for ages 12 and up.)

OSCAR WILDE (England & Ireland)--THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (Main Stage Production at THE PERFORMING ATS CENTER, SCCC, Newton, NJ)

Although his given name was Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills, most lovers of his plays, fiction, and essays know him as Oscar Wilde. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, his father was an esteemed surgeon. His father’s career and Oscar’s scholarships enabled the young man to attain an impressive college education  at Trinity College, Dublin (1871 – 1874) and Magdalen College, Oxford (1874 – 1878.)

During his college years, he became part of the “Oxford Movement,” a group that expounded upon the virtues of classical culture and artistry. Also during his studies, Wilde became a devotee of the school of aestheticism, the belief that art should be created for the sake of beauty and not as a lesson in ethics. (In other words, he believed in “art for the sake of art”).

Thanks to her father’s fortune, Wilde was freed from economic concerns, and he focused more on his creative endeavors. By 1886 Oscar and Constance, his wife, had two sons, Cyril and Vyvyan. Despite his seemingly idealistic family dynamic, Wilde still loved being a celebrity – and still loved the decadent parties and homosexual affairs which his social status afforded.

His greatest successes occurred when he began writing comedies for the stage-- Lady Windermere’s Fan, An Ideal Husband and  The Importance of Being Earnest.

One of Oscar Wilde’s more boastful quotes about himself happened when the famous author was visiting America. A New York customs officer asked if he had any goods to declare. Wilde replied, “No, I have nothing to declare (pause) except my genius.” If Wilde was justified in such self-love it is perhaps because of his most acclaimed play, The Importance of Being Earnest. Of all the plays, this is the most merry, and perhaps the most balanced with witty dialogue, romantic misunderstandings, and laughter-inducing coincidences.

REVIEWS

“The Importance of Being Earnest” is the rare work of art that achieves perfection on its own terms…it dazzles both with its light touch and with its sturdy construction, like a cathedral made of spun sugar...Buoyant and consistently funny….”

More!

For over a decade, members of Emish have been performing in various professional groups including anything and everything from Traditional Irish, Irish Rock, and Punk to Symphony Orchestras. Individually, they have toured as far as Europe and Japan honing their performing skills – all preparing themselves for the day that they would collectively form Emish. With their versatility and well-seasoned skills, combined with on-stage foot stomping energy and off-stage charisma, Emish has been making fans from one coast to the other. Their music includes “emishified” traditional songs and tunes with their own original compositions that creates a sound described as “Celtic Rock with an edge”.

Although Emish tours regularly throughout the country, they still hold tight to their roots back home and have been honored with being voted the “Best Band of the Hudson Valley” for the past two years. In only four years since the conception of the group, they have already recorded two albums with their debut CD “This Light” selling over 5,000 copies--and are working on their third now!

Whether they are playing on the main stage at a festival, theater halls or pubs, Emish brings an energy packed show with witty banter on stage, leaving their fans asking for more.

SYNOPSIS

Dracula returns to Tri-State to haunt and thrill another season! A tongue-in-cheek adaptation of Bram Stokers’ chilling novel, transporting us to a small village in the English countryside. A trio of doctors, a young reporter and a brave English lord battle the mysterious Count Dracula for the life of the beautiful heroine. It takes place at a sanitorium; the mysterious Count Dracula has recently set up housekeeping at a rundown mansion next door-and local village maidens have been dropping like flies. (Flies and spiders are dropping too, as a sanitorium inmate named Renfield pops them into his mouth throughout the play. THE PASSION OF DRACULA is the perfect mix of thrills, laughter, and old-fashioned detective work. Final performance is Halloween Eve for all you ghouls and goblins!
