A Play for Adults
REVIEWS
"Collected Stories, a Los Angeles Drama Critic's Circle winner last season as well as a Pulitzer finalist in 1997, is provocative and delivers punch that is felt after the lights go down. . . . A thought-provoking story."
                                                        --SHOW MAGAZINE
"Fantastically witty and provocative . . . Probing  the development and ultimate disintegration of a student-teacher relationship over the course of six years, Donald Margulies’ new play is an engaging, witty and painful work."
                                                         --TIME OUT (NY)
". . . a love story of sorts, . . .that reaches that level of  intensity at which its participants are all too capable of injuring each other, perhaps irreparably. . . . a rich subtextual dialogue . . . ."
                                                        --NY TIMES
"With his fine ear for detail, Margulies creates an authentic, insular world, and he gives equal weight to the opposing viewpoints of two formidable characters."
                                                        -- LOS ANGELES TIMES
" . . . Margulies’ best play to date . . ."
                                                        -- NY POST
"Margulies’ play is an affecting character study and a well-drawn portrait of the insular world of fiction writers, demonstrating his gift for sharply written and incisive dialogue."
                                                        -- HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
"As usual, Margulies holds the rich ore of  his material up to the light so that it sends beams in every direction...always fluid and lively, the play is thick with ideas, like a stockpot of good stew."
                                                        -- VILLAGE VOICE.(NY)
THE STORY--

Ruth Steiner, a prickly short story writer, is courted by the literary community as the voice of her age. The balance of that life is disrupted when Ruth takes on Lisa, her gifted and ungainly student in a creative writing class at Columbia University, as her assistant. Lisa brings an overwhelming devotion, curiosity and willingness to learn to the job. Professor Steiner encourages her to write for publication, and Lisa evolves from an insecure young girl to a confident published writer under Ruth's tutelage. During the six years over which the play occurs, Lisa elicits the total confidence of her mentor and even gets the older woman to venture into what had always been forbidden ground for Ruth: the story of her sad love affair as a young woman with the self-destructive poet Delmore Schwartz.

The conflict stems from these stories that were told to her by Ruth as their  relationship develops. Were they appropriated or did they now belong to the recipient to develop into new stories? Inspired by the famous controversy between novelist  David Leavitt and poet Stephen Spender (Spender claimed that Leavitt's When England Sleeps had been lifted from his memoir, World Within Worlds).   COLLECTED STORIES examines this relationship between a brilliant writer and her younger female student. As always, Margulies is literate, intellectually stimulating, and able to create characters of both dramatic and human interest.  Here two worlds clash in age-old, ecumenical dueling, led up to by great  mutual emotional investment, and all the more bitter for it.

THE STORY:
. . . KINDERGARTEN takes a funny, insightful and heartwarming look at what is profound in everyday life.  This tightly woven stage adaptation is an evening of theatrical storytelling that utilizes a revue format, with monologues, dialogues, and multiple voice narration. The many delightful stories feature colorful characters such as: a shy little boy who insists on playing the "pig' in his class production of Cinderella and steals the show; a man whose dream of flying carries him 11,000 feet over Los Angeles . . . in an aluminum lawn chair lifted by 45 helium-filled surplus weather balloons; a "mother of the bride" who brilliantly orchestrates the perfect wedding until the bowling hall of fate rolls down the aisle; and a modern-day Greek philosopher who finds the meaning of life in a piece of broken mirror from World War II.  These stories are about all of us and celebrate our very existence, from the whimsy of childhood to the wisdom of old age.  KINDERGARTEN has earned standing ovations at theaters worldwide.

THE STORY--
Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg's career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate's career, as a public school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park--or that has found him--bearing only the name "Sylvia" on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of this job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn't understand the relationship between man and dog. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.
